West Oakland Link
The West Oakland Link of the Bay Skyway is a proposed 1.1-mile-long elevated pedestrian and bicycle pathway that will connect Mandela Parkway with the existing San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge East Span path.
MTC needs your feedback on the proposed plans for West Oakland Link.
The West Oakland Link will safely separate bicyclists and pedestrians from industrial properties, railroad tracks and the Port of Oakland’s heavy truck traffic. The project is a vital component of the San Francisco Bay Trail and the Bay Skyway, an active transportation corridor that will link the East Bay and – in the future – downtown San Francisco.
The project will also connect directly with the West Grant Avenue’s bicycle corridor to the east, which leads directly into downtown Oakland. The West Oakland Link will provide equitable mobility and restore access for West Oakland’s disadvantaged communities to:
- High-quality jobs at the Port of Oakland and other locations;
- Shoreline recreation; and
- Via the rest of the Bay Skyway, jobs and cultural and recreational resources on Treasure Island and in downtown San Francisco.
The West Oakland Link will increase safety for residents of West Oakland and the greater East Bay to bike and walk to the waterfront by way of a structure that is separated from the truck and rail traffic.
The project will connect Mandela Parkway in West Oakland with key parts of the San Francisco Bay Trail: the Bay Bridge East Span path, Judge John Sutter Regional Shoreline and Treasure Island.
Project Support & Funding
The Bay Area Toll Authority, Alameda County Transportation Commission, the City of Oakland and Caltrans support the projected $100 million project. The proposed project may need to be constructed in phases based on the availability of State and Federal funds.
