Steady rain failed to dampen enthusiasm among the scores of Bay Area residents who turned out on Friday, March 24 to celebrate the public unveiling of BART’s new Warm Springs/South Fremont station and the completion of the agency’s long-awaited Warm Springs Extension, on which passenger service began the following day. The $890 million Warm Springs Extension stretches the BART system 5.4 miles south of the Fremont station, which for 45 years marked the end of the line, and paves the way for the opening of another 10-mile extension to Milpitas and the Berryessa district of East San Jose through the Santa Clara Valley Transportation Authority (VTA)’s BART-to-Silicon Valley project slated for completion late this year.
Accessibility is one of the cornerstones of the Warm Springs/South Fremont station’s design. The primary entry plaza is linked to pedestrian walkways and bike lanes; and the station features bike lockers and racks on the ground level, as well as bike channels in stairways, making it easier for bicyclists to carry their bikes up and down. The Warm Springs/South Fremont station also boasts 2,082 parking spots, including 42 solar-powered electronic vehicle charging stations as well as intermodal connections to AC Transit and private shuttles. The solar panels installed on the roof of the station and on several parking canopies will produce more than enough energy to meet the station’s daytime power needs. Read the complete story here.
